Visit the attractive soft-sanded beaches of Agadir along with its historical kasbah for a day of relaxation. Agadir is relatively brand-new compared to other cities. However, it is a city that endured a tragic earthquake in 1960 which left about 15,000 people dead, but with the love and perseverance of its people, they managed re-build their city as the most beautiful resort in the area.
Get picked up from your hotel in Marrakech or a spot of your choice and then start today’s trip to Agadir.
First, we will visit the vast garden of Agadir that is nicknamed “valley of the birds”. The garden owes this nickname to the huge aviary it contains. Also, other animal species such as ostriches and goats can be seen, peacefully moving about. This place is indeed a reward and ideal for a natural break after a three-hour drive from Marrakech.
After relaxing and enjoying the valley of the birds, we will move to explore the historical site of the old Kasbah in Agadir. The kasbah of Agadir (Agadir Oufla) is a historical landmark in Agadir that housed the old city of Agadir. A large part of the kasbah was affected by the earthquake that struck the city. The fort, is currently the last remaining part, is located on the top of a hill rising 236 meters above sea level, on the north side of town near the port. Historically speaking, the Kasbah was built in the year 1540 by the Saadian sultan Muhammad, then in 1752 the kasbah was restored by the Alaouite Sultan Moulay Abdullah. However, it was partially destroyed after the earth quake in 1960 and only the ramparts were partially rebuilt. Today, this magnificent kasbah still lies on a hill above the city of Agadir, offering beautiful views of Agadir and charming view of the beach and the port.
Later, visit Musée du Patrimoine Amazigh which is specialized in the Berber heritage of the Sous area, known as Amazigh. With an excellent display of photographs and Berber artifacts, especially jewelry and daggers, the museum is a great place to learn about the traditional life and culture of the region’s native Amazigh people.
After exploring the museum, we will head south to visit the La Medina d’Agadir, an idealized Berber village, built using traditional techniques and materials, with workshops for 30 independent artisans. Visit the medina where crafts are made and sold. A bit lively and chaotic, the medina and the souks contained within are best explored on foot. Enter the souks at the gates Rue Chair al Hamra Mohammed Ben Brahim. Inside the enclosed area you can browse the labyrinth of streets and stalls selling fruits, vegetables, jewelry and goods from around the region. If you want to continue shopping, your driver will take you to Agadir’s two other main markets containing stalls selling Moroccan goods and tourist souvenirs.
Finally, in afternoon, you will have your own free time to relax in the golden soft-sanded beaches of Agadir Bay. The undisputed fact about Agadir is that life revolves around the beach, which is huge and, unlike other parts of the North African Atlantic, reasonably well-sheltered from the ocean winds. The city authorities keep it both clean and safe; sunbathers can generally relax in peace.
This morning we will drive towards the ancient city of Taroudant. This charming town is situated approximately 80 kilometers east of Agadir. Taroudant has a rich and resonant history that it once was the mighty capital of the Saadian kingdom, which stretched from the Atlantic to the east, nowadays Algeria, during the 17th century. Unlike Marrakech, almost the overall city of Taroudant is contained within beautiful orange ramparts that make the city feel like a small fortified market town. Interestingly enough, Taroudant has recently gained an impressive touristic reputation thanks to being one of the specialists in the production of the popular argan oil and argan natural products.
Today, on the way from Agadir to Taroudant, we will pass through the argan trees that grow only in that area in the whole world. If we are lucky enough, we might find some tree climbing goats clambering along the knotted tree trunks and branches to feed on the leaves and fruit. We will make sure to stop and capture this interesting spectacle.
Upon arrival to Taroudant, we will explore the main gate of the town along with its surrounding ancient ramparts that makes a beautiful backdrop for photographs.
Later, and most interestingly, we will visit the argan cooperative. In this place, you will get to discover and learn from the skillful ladies working there how they transform argan nuts into oil, butter and other beauty products. The materials they use are mostly traditional, which makes the final result rather more impressive.
Afterward, we will get to explore the inner medina that is described, like most of Moroccan medinas, as a maze of narrow streets. However, the impression of Taroudant medina always feels special with the random market along is twisted streets. Also, we will visit the Berber souk that continues to exist in the town for centuries alongside the Arab souk. Both of the souks have different specialties. In the Berber souk you will find different kinds of vegetables, spices, cloths and stronghold goods. However, on the Arab side of the souk, you will mainly find handmade crafts and products such as pottery, brass and copper, leather, carpets and rugs, and jewelry.
At the end of the tour, we will get to explore the other part of the ancient walls of Taroudant with Place al Alouvine, the large central square that takes place at the heart of the medina. The square is often described as mini Djamaa El Fnaa, where most of evenings, storytellers and local musicians gather there and preform what they have learnt from their ancestors.
